Barcode troubleshooting

Barcode not scanning?

Most scan problems come from size, contrast, missing quiet space, blurry exports, invalid data or scanner compatibility. Work through the list before reprinting labels or packaging.

Quick checks

  • Try another scanner or phone camera to rule out one bad reader.
  • Check that the barcode type matches the scanner or system you are using.
  • Make sure the code has enough blank space around it.
  • Increase contrast and avoid tinted or transparent backgrounds.
  • Export a fresh SVG or large PNG instead of resizing a small image.
  • Verify the data and check digit for EAN, UPC, EAN-8 or ITF-14.

Missing quiet zone

Barcodes and QR codes need clear space around them. If text, borders or artwork sit too close, the scanner may not know where the code begins.

Low contrast

A dark code on a light background is safest. Light gray, neon combinations, busy photos and transparent overlays can make the code unreliable.

Blurred image export

Small raster files often become soft when enlarged. Use SVG for print or export PNG/JPG large enough for the final size.

Wrong barcode data

Retail barcodes need valid digits and check digits. Some scanners also expect a specific format such as EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128 or ITF-14.

By barcode type

The fix depends on the format.

Why does my QR code scan on screen but not after printing?

Printing can shrink the code, soften edges, reduce contrast or add glare. Test the printed object itself, not only the screen preview.

Why does my barcode scan with one app but not another scanner?

Different scanners support different barcode types and settings. Confirm that the reader supports the format you generated.

Can a wrong check digit stop a retail barcode from scanning?

Yes. EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 use check digits. If the number is invalid, systems may reject it even if the bars are visible.
